I’ve been working on a quilt, provisionally called “Baby Quilt 4″. That was a bit of a boring name, so I finally found a better one. So here is “The Pointy Zigzag Quilt of Torture”, all nice and ready for basting…

Unfortunately I didn’t really think through the directions to iron the seams in, so all those zigzags have nice bunches of seams right at the zigzag points. The result is more akin to a bed of nails than a baby blanket so it’s definitely not suitable for a gift!

This is getting chalked up to experience and I just need to come up with present plan B!

Missing mail

I recently joined Bee Europa and the first round was in January. This is my first bee and I’m so excited to be involved and was even more excited when Linzi sent out her fabric. Well I waited, and waited and waited some more. Meanwhile fabric was received in other countries, blocks made and posted back and received by Linzi. And still no fabric.

Well I came home the other day to an apology letter from Royal Mail. Somehow the fabric disappeared on route so all I received was an empty envelope :( Not good.

I’m gutted for Linzi who lost 2 blocks worth of fabric. However she very kindly sent some more out and it arrived today. Isn’t it gorgeous?!

About turn!

In my best army drill sergeant voice, “Aaaaahbouuuut turn”!

So I like the Amy Butler fabrics I picked for my Baby Jane quilt, but I’m not 100% convinced. Ok, ok, I know I’ve been here before, but I think I’m nearly sorted so hang on in there!

I like the fabrics but I’m not convinced their moderness is right for my parents house. However, I really, really want to make a modern Baby Jane. Elle has pointed out that if I’m giving the quilt away, I can only really have input into the colour OR the pattern, so something’s gotta give.  So seeing as I picked the pattern, the modern fabric has to give.

I was talking with hubby last night and he made the same point that Cheryl did on my previous post – I’m going to be making this quilt for a LONG time, so I need to love what I’m doing. He then said I should make it in pink and it can live with us when it’s done. Isn’t he lovely :) Of course he could be banking on the fact that I’ll never get it finished… ;)

Anyway, colour saga over – pink fabrics, here I come… :)

I went shopping today armed with my Baby Jane requirements of modern, in blue or green with maybe some yellow and definitely brights. Picky? Me? Surely not!

My first stop wasn’t great because I found lots of lovely pink and purple fabrics, but nothing great in the blue department. Why is it if you’re looking for one colour, you’re guaranteed to find loads of totally desirable fabrics in anything but that colour? Anyway, I hit gold (well, more like blue and green) on the second stop, with some yummy Amy Butler fabrics:

L to R: Honeycomb in aqua (Midwest Modern). Happy Stripe in grey (Daisy Chain). Kaleidoscope Dots in natural (Daisy Chain). Happy Stripe in river (Daisy Chain).

I think the colours in the above give me quite a good range to work from, so coming back to layout, I’m going to have light and dark diamonds. The light diamonds will be made up of squares made from blue/green fabrics on a light background (like the ones above). The dark diamonds will be made from blue/green fabrics on a dark background. Guess I need to find some of those then!

I’m still on the topic of Baby Jane colour schemes, but I’m a lot closer to a decision!! I had some REALLY helpful comments on my last post and there were several points which made me stop and think:

  • Purple, as the complement of yellow, is worth considering and comes in lots of different shades
  • A yellow quilt in a yellow room would be yellow overload (a very good point)
  • I could pick fabrics which aren’t yellow, but have some yellow in them

So, I’ve been pondering a lot, and finally decided on a dark purple/light purple diamond layout like this:

I was round at my parent’s house the other day and it was funny – I could just see the quilt in that room, which is odd because I’m usually rubbish at that kind of visualisation. So I suggested purple to my Mum and… she didn’t like it. AAARGH!!! No pink and now no purple! Apparently green and blue are good though…

Time to go think about blue or green!

I said I was off to square up blocks, but it’s really not my favourite task, so I took a wee break to brainstorm Baby Jane colour schemes! I was going to play around with my colouring pencils but they’ve gone walkies, so I went geeky and used a spreadsheet instead!

Here are my first 4 ideas:

Ok, the next bit is quite long winded – sorry! I’m trying to work out what layout and colours to go with and I’m really quite stuck… Feel free to skip the rest, although if would be great if you had any comments or ideas. This is such a massive project that I really, really don’t want to mess it up and regret my design!

Now I know this is a traditional quilt, but I’d like to use modern fabrics and play about with the layout a bit so that it ends up looking less traditional.

So first up, layout. I really like the way this quilt has an off-centre diamond and I’d like to do something similar. I’d originally thought of having off-centre squares, but now I’ve tried a diamond layout, I think I prefer it.

In the original quilt, I really struggled to see the around-the-world pattern and initially though the block colours were random. I prefer logical to random so would like to make the layout more obvious. With a square layout, each round has more squares than a diamond, so I think this immediately makes the layout clearer. But I’m still preferring diamonds. Perhaps making each diamond 2 blocks wide would make them more visible?

Next up, colour. Now, if I ever finish this quilt, it won’t be living with hubby and I. Hubby is not a fan of this particular quilt and doesn’t want it in our flat. That’s fair enough – there are lots of other quilts I’d like to make that he’d love so I’m happy for this quilt to live elsewhere. So I’m going to make it for my parents house. I’ve wanted to make them a quilt for a while now and am pretty sure they’ll love the design. So this one’s for them.

All the blocks are made from 2 fabrics and for me, the background will be white, because I need to keep the costs down and Ikea’s white Dvala sheets are nice and cheap! For the foreground, I would L.O.V.E. to use hot pink and baby pink, but my Mum doesn’t like pink, let alone my Dad so it needs to be something else!

The quilt will be going in a room with yellow walls, hence the use of yellow in all the above ideas. Plus I like yellow, and although it’s not pink, yellow is good :) If I’m going to be working with one quilt for the length of time I’m going to be doing this for, then I want to like the colours (is that fair enough?).

To make the layout more obvious, I’d like to keep the number of foreground colours down. I’m thinking two (oh, that was obvious from the pictures?!) but I’m not sure about the second one. Orange? Blue? Green? A different shade of yellow? Brights? Pastels? The carpet in the room is beige and there’s some red and green in the curtains and the furniture is all pale-coloured wood, so I’ve got a fairly wide choice for the 2nd colour.

I don’t know. If anyone has made it this far, then I’d love to have some opinions. When you think of “modern”, what do you see?

Back with it!

Well, I’m back to feeling somewhat human, wahey! Over the last few days I’ve read so many blog posts and found so many cool new blogs. Without blogland, I think I’d have gone out of my mind with boredom over the last few days, but I have a feeling it could be interesting keeping up with everything I’m now subscribed to!

I’ve been debating colour schemes and fabric for my Baby Jane, but that’s on hold for a few days, because I’ve got a baby quilt to make! The wife of one of my uni friend’s had a boy this morning and I think the wee one definitely needs a quilt!

I’ve had these HST’s lurking in my stash since I made Baby Quilt 3.

I LOVE the stripy fabric and have got a layout worked out. But first I have 42 HST’s to square up, urrgh! Best get to it…

Lurgied up

Uuurgh, I am totally full of the cold :( I thought I’d been doing really well this winter but I’ve been off work for two days now :(

On the plus side, I’ve had time to look through some of the entries from Amy’s 2009 Fall Quilt Festival. I never really had a chance until today, so I took some time out from my hectic sneezing schedule to have a look! There are so many fab quilts and it’s well worth flicking through them if you haven’t done so already. Although you might need to wait until you’ve got a spare day as there are 683 entries!

Here are some of my favs (and no, I didn’t get through all 683!):

  • QuiltinJewel’s Kameleon Quilt is incredible. It’s got buttons and you can change how it looks by changing which flaps are buttoned where. I’ve never seen anything like it!
  • This star quilt by domesticat is a) incredible and b) has a lovely story behind it…
  • Lots of lovely colours in this one by Brown Paper Packages
  • I love this arrow quilt by Zonnah’s Addictions – it’s so original

In other news, my Dear Jane book arrived today although I had it sent to work rather than home as that is usually where I am during the day! Handily, hubby works in the same place and has picked it up for me, so that’s my evening’s entertainment sorted :)

I recently posted about how I was thinking of making a Dear Jane quilt. Well, I’ve just bought the book and the ruler set…! I only meant to buy the book, so I could look at the blocks and see if they’re do-able. But I’m getting really into the idea of making a Baby Jane and this seems to be the only shop in the UK that sells the rulers (and I’ve done A LOT of searching) so I thought I should get them whilst I can!

In case anyone else is looking for the Dear Jane rulers in the UK, then try Creative Grids. They don’t seem to rank very well in google’s search, but they have lots of great stuff and the P&P is reasonable. I think they’re my new favourite shop for notions!

I had so much fun last night! I met up with a couple of friends and we had a crafty evening. I crocheted and they sewed and we flicked through books and oogled notions. It was a lot of fun :)

Now hubby is not a fan of crochet. Apparently it’s something to do with “all those holes” and “it tends to look like a doily”! I think he’s also secretly worried I’m going to crochet him a jumper or something! So, egged on last night by the crafty girls, I decided to try and change his mind with a heart – awww! What man could resist a wonky crocheted heart from their wife?!

Apparently, this is a step in the right direction because it doesn’t look like a doily! It does have 2 holes though, so he’s not totally convinced. Men!

I did learn a valuable lesson making this. British double crochet is not the same as US double crochet, and I was working from a US pattern. DOH! I should have been doing triple crochet, not double crochet although it didn’t really matter.
